“Leaping Orca by Dorning” color scrimshaw on sperm whale’s tooth by Gary Dorning. Created in 1978 from the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. One almost never sees a Gary Dorning whale’s tooth from this era as anyone lucky enough to have one knows enough not to let it go. A stunning work from Dorning at the beginning of his long career in scrimshaw. Stands upright. Rare opportunity to obtain a Dorning at 1978 prices. NOTE: Smudges on tooth removed after photographs taken. After all, 1978 was a long time ago.

“Rare Dorning & Slwooko Scrimshaw” combination of old style and new style scrimshaw on walrus tusk by Gary Dorning and HB Slwooko. One of a kind, with traditional native work by well known artist, Slwooko, matched by color scrimshaw by Gary Dorning, one of the best wildlife scrimshanders in the contemporary scrimshaw era. From the collection of one of our clients who is no longer with us. Large, heavy tusk, 3 3/8″ wide. Won’t see another one along these lines.
Color scrimshaw on ancient mammoth ivory by Gary Dorning. Hornbills (Buceritide) are a family of birds found in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, and Malanesia. Dorning at his best, using both bright and subtle colors and tones to create just the right mood. Love the way the small beak is just visible as the mother feeds some type of berry to her young.
Color scrimshaw on whale’s tooth by Gary Dorning. Long considered one of the best wildlife scrimshanders ever, Dorning has created a stunning piece on whale ivory. Looks like the lion has caught a glimpse of his next meal and in ready to pounce. Love the detail in the lion’s mane and the way Dorning has used negative space in the long grass in the foreground. Quite impressive work on a nice sized tooth, 3/4 pound for those interested in weight.
